Easing the transition from IE6 to using newer browsers…

Here’s an idea to help those people in your office move away from IE6 to realmore modern browsers.

  1. Install FireFox or Opera on their machine
  2. Remove the Internet Explorer icon
  3. Replace the Opera or Firefox icon with the appropriate following ones
  4. Tell them when there’s any confusion that “Microsoft updated their browser, it looks different now!”

Hehe :) Very Nice and Ingenious Idea :)

  2. Big Mad Kev Says:

    Whoooo!

    Brilliant IDEA!

  3. Daniel Says:

Great idea, now all we need is a virus that will do that to every computer.

  4. Gary Stanton Says:

Totally… I’m going to start doing this on clients’ machines immediately.

  5. Tristan Turpin Says:

    Yesss ! :-)

    Way too subtle… ;-)

    haha /running over to my mom’s machine…

whoops, she’s using firefox already!! :)

  8. Chris Says:

@Michal the issue is that this can be blocked by IT, my way cannot :)

  9. Xavier Says:

Don’t forget to use the IE theme on Firefox, or else fear rejection!

Reminds me of this, actually :)

  10. Elliott Kember Says:

I’ve done this before – It worked a treat. Definitely a good idea.

I’m pretty sure you can get Firefox to say “Microsoft Internet Explorer” in the title bar, too.

  11. Phil Ricketts Says:

Great idea. A lot of people (including me) do this anyway.

What someone really needs to do, is create a ‘virus’ that targets IE6 users and does a silent install of FF, and replaces links with ones to firefox. I’d even make iexplore.exe an executable that simply links to firefox’s exe.

    Anyone up for a challenge?

I don’t advocate malicious virus’, but I would advocate this one.

  12. Anon Says:

More people need to know that Chrome installs without needing admin rights.
So many people don’t even try.

  13. Phil Ricketts Says:

Oh, haha, just read above comment. I guess this means that someone now needs to actually do it!

It’d be easier for a virus to install firefox than upgrade someone to IE8 (much better than IE7)

  14. Sarah Bourne Says:

It’s sad but true: my work desktop HAS to have IE6 because important internal applications don’t work with IE7, and we don’t seem to have piles of money lying around to fix the apps or the vendors haven’t done anything about it. It is difficult for me to fathom, but a surprising number of people still use IE6 as their primary browser even when Firefox is loaded with IE Tab. Just think how amazed they’ll be when they get to upgrade!

  15. martinb Says:

Better to rip out the entire Winstall and replace with Kubuntu.

Oh, you already spotted that one: http://web.archive.org/web/20070203231920/http://www.degredo.net/

  16. Delilah Hinman Says:

Haha, I should do this for my co-workers. It would make my job easier!

  17. Kent Says:

Good suggestion. I am with you.

    Cheers.

  18. Binny V A Says:

Brilliant. Will try this on the next system with IE!

  19. Don Crowley Says:

haha! Yet another fiendishly evil plan. I love it

  20. Dimitar Haralanov Says:

I really think people should not be using Internet Explorer. I am not saying it isn’t a good browser, it’s just there are better(x3) ones out there. Plus, less IE - less worries for developers :)

  21. Dreamer Says:

    Gooooooood idea !!
