This has a great deal of resonance for me at the mo. Having just set to on a G Code project. My first attempt at an open source project (one I've started that is). Being fairly petrified by the idea of baring my hideous hackery to the world, I've found it oddly liberating to actually REAO. I've just put up a bit warning stating that the project is in its early throws, and it immediately lifted the weight of 'getting it perfect' before I put it 'out there'.

*And* having asked one of my developers how much of his current projects he's done... :)

The part about managers promoting strange timelines on coders is _so_ true. Just yesterday a coder friend mentioned that his manager wanted to know "what percentage of your task A did you finish today?". This linear chunking-away-at-a-glob-of-code view that many managers have of how code is "created" is hilarious.
