SEO and Accessibility – a talk

Here is a talk I just gave at an internal SEO conference about the overlap of SEO and Accessibility. The main consensus is that if you look at it closely, the two are really trying to solve the same problem, most of the time our approach is what makes it tricky.

    Awesome ! :p
is not a link : of course it’s an anchor. A link is implemented with tag.

In some of your slides you show the title as “The business case for web standards | Main / Home Page”, and I was wondering if you thought everything after the pipe would be better off excluding from the listings?

In most cases that part is for the benefit of a human navigating your site, not necessarily the search engine or tagging system like del.icio.us. I was thinking you could use unobtrusive javascript to append those words onto the title, for the benefit of the human, while the more concise version will be indexed.

I beg to differ. Serp-bending (on page) seo very, very often runs COUNTER to good design, accessibility, and UI. If you’re not at the point of having to strike a balance, deciding just how far you will let seo techniques erode the other user-centric considerations, then you’re simply not pushing seo hard enough.
