I for one do the second thing from your list of three, consulting, only with a twist that works for me. I do not only consult, but try to deliver end products, along with teams of the client. It has that edge that I can deliver quite a lot, as I spent month on a project (sometimes years).

So my chances of delivering something really good are well enough, I hope.

But when I leave it always is with that feeling of not knowing what happens to the nice standards I set, true enough.

just my two cents, all of the three possibilities have something going for them.

Good points you made on both sides of the job.

There are so many people who do not understand what a language is that we, always, put definitions of what it is and what it is not, what it could be and what it could be not.

If I told to my friends that what I learned about javascript came from some people who work in big companies, they will deny what I am in that way : "you are not good enough for an anarchist."

Well, What I am is not What I do and what I do is not what I am for the others...

Very good points. The phrase "Golden Handcuffs" also applies when working for a large company.
