I agree completely. We run room booking software and as soon as we release an update you can guarantee, it will work fine in firefox, but ie...will play all sorts of mind games

When I got tired of hacking my CSS for IE6, I went the <code>html > body</code> way and used a single conditional comment to warn IE6 users that sorry, but my sleep is sometimes paramount and overpasses the need to be as coherent as possible across browsers.

I haven't made up my mind yet on the version meta issue, but I feel that it's a sensible thing to do from Microsoft's point of view. And I think: hey, if this takes up too much of my time, I may end up 'forgetting' (as in 'hey look, I'm forgetting willfully') the meta and use conditional comments exactly as I did for IE6.

We'll see. I won't conjecture more. You're right in saying that the dispute must still be going on.

The website made by the Man in suit won't break since it might render in IE 5.5 mode (no doctype). The web sites that will break in IE8 mode are the one written with standards and fixes for IE6 and IE7.

That's what did happen with the launch of IE7. Website in standard mode were broken, the other in quirk mode were not.

"How many intranet systems are inaccesible to non-JavaScript users, keyboard users or blind people? Yes, it is hard to make a company change these systems, but for Pete’s sake, let’s get rid of this cruft!"

Ahmen to that!

I work in such a company and would consider myself a standards aware developer, it really pains me some peoples narrow vision.

If moving forward means breaking "some" sites then i'm all for it.
