So what is the deal with the new gmail crashing my Firefox (or stalling it)
I am a big fan of gmail (and a lot of colleagues scowl at me for it). With the massive amount of emails I get daily and me working on 3 computers there is just no other way to get around them.
Until the latest update of gmail though. Now my two laptops (both Windows) get stuck and I have to shoot down Firefox 5 times a day to be able to work. Sorry Google, but what happened? I turned off Firebug as you asked me to and yet it messes up. I also tried switching to the “older interface” but my setting does not get stored (yes, cookies are enabled).
I also tried to turn off sounds of the chat inside gmail but yet it keeps crashing. Don’t make me change because of superfluous bells and whistles, I have too many good contacts in your system.

So I’m not the only one!
A few minutes ago, I opted to disable Firebug for GMail instead of using the work around they supplied (like I did yesterday), and all seems well now.
Even though I’ve obviously heard that the new GMail is out/coming, I assumed I wasn’t one of the blessed ones since I haven’t noticed anything different (except for these obvious crashes). I guess ‘Better GMail’ is overriding any changes made to the UI since the only change I see is the crashes you mention.
Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t see anything different with my 2nd GMail account over in IE land either (although that one doesn’t crash lol). So much for Google and Firefox being in bed together for each others good!

Oh thank God, I’m not the only one. And I never had Firebug installed.

Maybe it’s another firefox extension of Yours. On my Windows machine, I’ve been warned about Firebug also, so I turned it off – GMail works. Switching versions works also. On my Kubuntu however Firebug is still active and working. No Firebug warning though. Anyway, Gmail’s working as expected.
On a side note: I don’t see any speed improvement at all, as proclaimed. But I still love GMail :)

You know – I noticed the same many more crashes recently – but didn’t make the connection to GMail. I do have GMail open, pretty much all the time though.
This morning I started a new profile, just copying over what I needed (passwords & bookmarks) and installing a smaller set of extensions (Itsalltext, firebug, distrust). No crashes yet, but we’ll see how the day goes.

I did notice yesterday that the interface has changed for mobile safari (was checking on my new iPod). I assume not directly related, but that might explain some of the motivation for change.

Disabled Firebug as directed, and Gmail continues to work fine.
Didn’t noticed any speed changes.
Hadn’t ever opened Firebug on Gmail, but did so after they asked me to close it, and the code looked a bit messy.
BTW, the work laptop has Win2000 (!), and Gmail hasn’t noticed Firebug. Weird.

I’m not really surprised about GMail and Firebug. Firebug can be enabled and disabled on a site by site basis. Personally, I disable it for every site, then ‘Allow’ my development servers. It can then be enabled again if you need to use it on any other site.

This was causing us some problems too.
After blocking mail.google.com from the HTML Validator plugin, all has been rosey for the last for weeks.
