@chrishunt: Leaving the arrogant tone of your comment to the fact that comments don’t show emotions, I’d say you are right that the loading process of a page is not the top priority where to optimise, but it is a big deal. Not for power users that just load content in the background while reading another tab but for first time visitors – a slow loading and clunky page leaves an unpleasant subconscious feeling. We just don’t like to wait, this is that cool new information superhighway!

Thanks for these techniques, no doubt they could come in useful somewhere. However, I can’t help feeling that people who obsess about what their page looks like while it’s loading often have way too much time on their hands. Most sites have more important issues for people to deal with than this.

Loading avatars with JavaScript is a great idea, Chris. I can immediately think of two different sites where I could implement this straight away.
