In need of a new title

Just like the Childlike Empress in the Never Ending Story I am right now without a proper name for my new role.

Yes, that is right, I slipped into a new role in my current job and boy is it something I wanted to do for years and years. However, the dilemma I am in is that the job is so versatile and multi-facetted that I have trouble coming up with a proper job title! This is where you come in. Can you think of a good job title that explains my following responsibilities?

Responsible for the following key areas related to Code Quality, Code Reuse, Talent Acquisition and Talent Development.

  • Internal training and code review in key technologies and development standards.
  • External evangelism and assessment of these technologies through the engagement of developer communities.
  • Supporting internal teams in identifying, assessing and hiring new talent.
  • Developing new tools that will support development standards to help us build better products faster.
  • Build and maintain front-end code libraries for reuse

Any ideas?

“Master of Puppets”, “Root of All Good”, “One Chef to Train Them All”, “The Overmage”, “The i-com Factor” and so on, and so on. :) :)

But the word “Manager” must be definitely there: “Quality Manager”, “QoS Manager”.

    And my favorite: “Mr. Manager”

  2. chris holland Says:

    tech evangelist

  3. adam Says:

lord of the code, overseer of the clean code, quality code practitioner manager educator…

  4. Jon Says:

At first I thought ‘Web Evangelist’ but upper management may not like that; it also has religious connotations which may or may not be appropriate for you. Then I thought ‘Web Enabler’. I thought I was on to a winner till Google informed me that enabler are people that can help a self destructive person remain in self destructive – not so good.

Then my brain stopped working, it’s been a long day.

  5. Ara Pehlivanian Says:

I’d go with Tech Lead. Short but broad enough to cover all that you do.

  6. Hans Dreesen Says:

    Heilmannager?

  7. Mathias Hellquist Says:

    “Chief Geek” or possibly “McGyver”.

Otherwise: “Head Code Marketing Evangelism Guru” or perhaps “My Title Is Longer Than Yours. Now. It really is. Hah.”

    :)

  8. LucaPost Says:

You’re under ‘WebGurus’ in my GoogleReader rss aggregator (Accessibility & Ajax too)

  9. Stéphane Deschamps Says:

LucaPost’s idea is not that bad, consedering for whatever reason that more and more people associate ‘evangelist’ with religion, although it’s been used in the tech world for many years now.

Yet guru as a self-chosen title seems a bit too er… immodest.

I’d stick to the Web Evangelist bit.

(on my visit cards I wrote “web HCI expert”, but not sure it says a lot, and I hate the word ‘expert’, actually, but my company needs to know who knows the job and who doesn’t, so we’re not afraid of big words…)

  10. Karl Says:

hmm, perhaps Technology Quality and Development Manager?

  11. Rob Mason Says:

    God?

  12. Cathy Says:

    MOT

    Master of TechNinjas

  13. Max Says:

    How about Web Technology Foreman

  14. Matt Snider Says:

I have a similar role at my company and after much thought, I felt that “Web Application Developer” was an appropriate title. You might want to be “Executive Web Application Developer” _

  15. Frank Michlick Says:

Whatever you pick, make sure that the corresponding domain name is available ;-)

  16. David Joseph Says:

Head Librarian? Seriously though, it’s tricky since I guess whatever it turns out to be will no doubt have to fit with / differeniate from other peoples job title’s? So let us know a few…

  17. frank Says:

    Technology Engineer Evangelist

  18. Ross Bruniges Says:

I think the words chief (because its a good word and should be in more job titles), web, quality, technology and recruitment should be in there. So….

Chief: web tech, recruitment and quality.

As much as I tried I couldn’t get a food acronym out of that!

  19. Matt Says:

    Head Burger Flipper

  20. Jason Porritt Says:

    Web Craftsmanship Lead
    Head Web Craftsman

Anyway something that gets across the responsibility of promoting quality and craftsmanship and fostering the growth of fellow developers. It’s a complex job!

  21. Ted Drake Says:

Nate K had a great title on his business cards. I can’t remember what it was but it evoked good feelings. If I remember correctly, it had some all-american commie vibes.

  22. Jim Amos Says:

Where I work we call the regular code monkeys like meself ‘User Interface Engineer’ and the role you just described would be titled ‘User Interface Architect’.
