I had a wry grin about your users, like ours, getting hung up on copy and visual design. The other thing we've found causes chaos is any kind of spelling or grammatical mistake - users find these immediately and get very distracted by them. Which means you have to do a proper job of proof-reading the copy, even though it "shouldn't matter" at this stage in the gae if you're testing early....

Chris,
Copy, Copy, Copy, leave the copy out and the user asks why the copy isn't there? you put it in and they focus on the copy and forget about the interaction. I think the fact is that users find the whole process of testing quite intimidating and invariably don't listen as intently to instructions as we would like them to. Or maybe it's just me.

Just reading Don't Make Me Think at the moment. There is a section at the end about user group testing. Sadly there is nothing on managing egos. I once had a situation where a designer stormed out after user after user failed to accomplish set tasks. At the mention of a rethink he stormed out saying "They are all idiots."

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the write-up - user testing is something that we just don't do at all, but I think it would be useful. Where did you get your testers from?
