Web Standards Group Meeting London

As some people asked me for them yesterday at the Web Standards Group Meetup London here are my slides on Maintainable JavaScript.

I took some out as they don’t make much sense without me monkeying around on stage and the others will be in the podcast that’ll be out some time later. I didn’t have any notes, but ad-libbed the lot so that’s all there is.

Thinkvitamin will release an article next week on the subject which will be a lot more hands-on and tell you what you can do to make your JavaScript more maintainable.

It was a lot of fun, and I hope to see some of the people I met at the next meeting. A big thanks to Stuart for organising and endangering all participants by allowing me on stage. Check out the flickr stream to see the crowd.

I really enjoyed your presentation, more so than Andy Budd’s to be honest. I went there to see Andy and hear what he had to say about CSS, and I left feeling quite disappointed.

However, I was pleasantly suprised with your presentation and with a free book thrown in for a last minute answer to question 2, I was delighted.

Suffice to say JavaScript is my weakest area so I felt I got plenty out of the presentation and I enjoyed reading the book on the bus home. :)

I have to say - I’m pretty much in agreement with Nick on this. And as a designer/developer that loosely dabbles in javascript, i never, ever thought I’d hear myself saying “Chris, I’ll be buying your book”. But here i am! Really enjoyed your talk and a welcome bit of light relief after Andy left me feeling so down… but i’ll be taking that issue up with him later, the little monkey!

Let me say that if I hadn’t been fortunate enough to win a copy I was certainly going to purchase one.

    :)

Hey - it was nice to meet you Chris.

I’m not really a javascripter myself (I’m on the CSS side, so I dabble, but will never excel I shouldn’t think), and have only just stopped being put off using it by bad usage over the years. Talks and work by both you and Jeremy Keith especially have really done wonders for me lately though. So, thanks for that. :)

I’m just going to basically echo what Nick said - I found Andy Budd’s presentation a bit of a letdown, particularly as it was my main incentive for going, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed yours, not being a Javascripter myself.

Hopefully I’ll be able to shake the deer-in-the-headlights look long enough to say hi next time.

    Hi Christian,

I have to agree with the other folks - I went primarily to hear Andy (not being a JavaScript expert myself) but actually enjoyed your stint much more!

And it was nice to chat afterwards about accessibility and Ajax etc. You’ve inspired me to get myself more acquainted with accessible JavaScript and DOM stuff. Thanks!
